Why We’re Back in San Miguel — Even After the Headlines
San Miguel de Allende at dusk, Tuesday February 24, 2025
I was originally planning to publish our first post from Mexico today, but I felt it was important to pause and address the questions many of you have been asking about the cartel activity reported in the news on Sunday.
Over the weekend, there were cartel-related security incidents in parts of Mexico, primarily connected to conflicts between criminal groups and government forces in specific regions of the country. These incidents, while serious, were localized and not widespread across the entire country. As is often the case, international headlines can make it sound as though all of Mexico is affected, when in reality the activity was concentrated in particular areas.
As of today, things are calm where we are. Daily life continues as normal—restaurants are open, markets are busy, and people are going about their routines. We are staying informed, aware of our surroundings, and following local guidance, but we feel safe and comfortable. We’ll share more about our experiences here tomorrow in our first official Mexico post.
