Where We Call Home In San Miguel de Allende

View from the street

This is our third trip to San Miguel de Allende, and interestingly enough, our third different place to call home while we’re here.

On our very first visit, we stayed for just a week. We found a charming Airbnb perched high on one of the hills overlooking town. It was a unit in a newer constructed condo building. While it was modern, clean, and very comfortable, it felt a bit generic — polished but missing the character and authentic charm that makes San Miguel so special.

For our second trip, we adjusted our strategy. We decided we wanted to be a bit closer to the “action.” So, we moved down the hill — not all the way, but enough to make daily life easier. The house was beautifully updated and comfortable and being closer to Centro made popping out for dinner or an evening stroll much more convenient, but it still was a hike up the hill at least a couple time a day.

This year, we feel like we found the sweet spot.

We were lucky enough to snag a beautiful home about halfway up the hill from Centro — and thankfully on the easier side of the climb. It gives us the perfect balance: close enough to walk everywhere, but high enough for a little quiet and a bit of a view.

The owner describes it perfectly:

“This historic San Miguel home provides an authentic experience that is truly centrally located. The house retains the charm, rustic appeal, and heart of the real Mexico. The central outdoor patio is surrounded by three large bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. The kitchen features an island with stools and spacious dining and living rooms. The house is only four blocks from the main square and is within walking distance to the city’s sights.”

While the house is definitely larger than two people truly need, we’ll be welcoming friends and family throughout our stay. Having extra bedrooms and a central patio gives everyone space to spread out — and makes it feel less like a rental and more like a home. You can view the lisitng here.

And that, for us, is just one of the things that keeps bringing us back to San Miguel.

One of the great things about San Miguel is the range of rental options. Depending on the season and location, you can expect to pay anywhere from $140 to $2,800 per week. And if you’re able to stay longer, monthly bookings can offer significant savings — sometimes up to 50% off, depending on the property and time of year.
